Chessed is in the Air

October 30, 2009

Guest Post by Mrs. Debbi Nissel, Chessed Coordinator

Hi everyone it’s Mrs. Nissel! By now all the girls have surely returned rejuvenated from our Sukkos break. In the weeks of school that we have had, the girls really possess an overall appreciation for all of the faculty and classes at Sharfman’s. Personally, I love being able to watch girls take the new knowledge that they acquire with each class and put it to use in daily activities. As I’m sure you know our goal in Sharfman’s is to allow you to acquire tools for life and forever move in a positive direction. As such, we want you to enhance your year in Israel not only through incredible classes but also by performing acts of Chessed! And so, as Chessed Coordinator, I personally meet with each and every student to build a unique Chessed opportunity that will allow you to maximize your Chessed experience. After customizing a Chessed experience that will suit you, we hold our Annual Chessed Workshop in which we dispense great advice and insights into performing Chessed with a smile and also serve some tasty cookies!

All You Can Eat Sushi Night!

October 29, 2009

Guest Post by Yehudis Smith, Chonechet

The Asian Themed Bayit Cham that I just hosted was in one word: unbelievable! We never knew making sushi could be so much fun :-) Everyone loved the sushi because it was so fresh and delicious! We have to hand it to Jacklyn who made beautiful looking rolls upon rolls of sushi and to Miriam Kahlili for making the rice so perfect and tasty! It was also Shayna’s birthday so we made her a Seaweed Birthday Cake, sounds yummy doesn’t it?! All in all, we really enjoyed making the rolls and spending time with one another. The girls where at my house for hours in which we schmoozed ate sushi and continued to work on our Sharfman’s spirit. Oh and by the way, you can tell that Kedma Choir Practice is in the air, because everyone is talking about it already!! Anyways, even though there are Ashkenazim to Sephardim in my group, I love the fact how we all come together…

Pretzel Making Bayit Cham!

October 25, 2009

Guest Post by Tzipporah Moscovitz, Chonechet

Well, the Bayit Cham last night was a smashing success! When the girls arrived they were treated to a warm and delicious soup as well as a healthy salad. The dessert waiting for them was warm chocolate and amareto cake-is there any left? :-) ? Anyways, We all had a great time talking about school, classes and some extra home time, which is really what Bayit Cham events are all about! Then when the dough had risen enough we made our very own pretzels. Some girls made the standard pretzel design while others showed off their more creative side. And, I still cant figure out how the girls managed to make sooo many pretzels in the time that they were at my house!

Beading and Jewelry Making Night!

October 22, 2009

Guest Post by Adina Stern and Leah Kopciel

Food and jewelry. What more could a girl want!? Well, a lot! But that’s exactly what the we got on Beading and Jewelry Making Night. We had a blast making necklaces, bracelets, and key chain charms for our cell phones. Mrs. Shira Fruchter, a professional bead and jewelry maker, came to Sharfman’s and showed us the art of bead making that included interesting patterns as well as fun things to do that allowed us to really personalize our jewelry. We all worked really hard on our jewelry creations, and came out of the activity with something to be proud of and either wear or have a cute accessory for our cell phone. Plus, we enjoyed homemade chocolate cake, and rugalach as well as vegetable sticks

Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan!

October 19, 2009

Today may have been the second day of Rosh Chodesh Mar Cheshvan, but it was far from Mar (bitter) – well, at least in Sharfman’s. As we learned in some of our classes, the month of Cheshvan kicks off the rainy season. However, to all the girls’ surprise, the first day of Rosh Chodesh was a heat wave! And so, Rabbi Sharfman treated us all to a refreshing treat. Each and everyone of us got a Popsicle, to bring in the cold of winter and to cool us off from the heat. Today we all received our own official looking Day Calendar from the school. It was really a nice way to bring in Rosh Chodesh :-)

Golan Tiyul

October 15, 2009

After our Sukkot vacation, school has been off to a great start. And yet, I can’t believe we’re already getting ready for another overnight Tiyul (trip) and I haven’t even gotten a chance to write about the first one. We spent 2 days having a great time touring the Golan Heights. Rabbi Jacobs is the best guide ever! On the first day we had some hands-on training in living the life of a Bedouin. We got to dress the part, ride donkeys, bake Mehadrin Bedouin Pita using the same ovens and stuff they do and eat them in a tent with Humous (we ate the Pitas with Humous, not the tent). It was fun learning about how life was like in Israel in ancient days.
